Veteran's Day Ceremony

Written by P/R COL William Day
Regimental Commander

The colors of the 8th Regiment, National Society of Pershing Rifles flew high last weekend during the annual Veteran's Day Memorial Ceremony held by the Military Order of the World Wars at Arlington National Cemetery. The ceremony included a presentation by members of the Military Order and a posting of the colors by Pershing Riflemen representing the 8th Regiment and the Society at the gravesite of General John J. Pershing.

Veteran's Day is held on Armistice Day, 11 November, which marks the date that brought the First World War to a close. Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice. The Commander-in-Chief of the American Expeditionary Force during World War I, General of the Armies John J. Pershing, represented the United States and its service men and women at the signing of the Armistice.

This ceremony holds special meaning to both the Pershing Rifles and the Military Order. Not only do both organizations recognize the importance of remembering and honoring America's veterans, but we also take this time to remember and honor the founder of both the Society and the Order, General John J. Pershing. It is something the 8th Regiment is proud to have been able to be a part of and will continue to participate in for years to come.

Riflemen participating in the event included P/R Maj. Jeremy Deibler, P/R Maj. Patrick Clark, P/R 1LT Chris Urena, P/R TSgt Jessica Wood, and P/R TSgt Kristin Audele.
